It’s Monday 25th June 2012 and some tasty news from Pumulani

Life is always sweet here on Lake Malawi, but this month it’s been even sweeter. The kitchen team have been on tenterhooks the past few weeks, eagerly awaiting the arrival of a special guest – Martin Shenfield, a top pastry chef from the UK, has now arrived to coach the Pumulani chefs on the finer points of pastry and bread making. The team have been creating some delicious sweet treats, from fabulously flaky breakfast pastries to artisan breads and decadent desserts.

We’ve been packing the new pastries and treats onto the dhow for a series of stunning dhow breakfasts. The lake is so calm and still in the mornings at the moment, it’s almost like a mirror.

With the changing of the seasons it’s also easier to see the birdlife that surrounds the lodge, with Glyn our eagle-eyed guide spotting pygmy kingfishers, arrow-marked barblers and Pels Fishing Owl alongside the ever-present fish eagles. It’s always breath-taking to take a trip in one of our two speedboats to feed these amazing birds of prey, with fish bought from a local fisherman in a dug-out canoe!

Our resident star expert, Roy, has also been busy, showing guests the wonders of the Milky Way through our powerful stargazer telescope. The nights have been so clear recently that we’ve been able to give guests a glimpse of Saturn, Venus, Mars and even an up-close-and-personal view of the craters of the moon! The stars are just as bright down on the beach, especially when viewed with a drink in hand, wrapped up in a cosy blanket next to the fire while you wait for your dinner to be cooked on the braai.

And of course, we’re looking forward to the start of July, when there will be a new addition to the Pumulani family – husband and wife waiters Loyce and Michael are expecting their second child. We’re all very excited to meet the new arrival!

That’s it for this week! Hopefully we’ll see you at Pumulani very soon!
